Deep Space Nine

main

The Story:

A former Cardassian space-station in orbit of Bajor and more importantly near the only known stable wormhole which ends into the Gamma quadrant. The wormhole is artificial, mantained by mysterious aliens called the Verterons who are called godlike Prophets by the poeple of Bajor. Captain Benjamin Sisko is also contacted by these beeings, who don't know time as they life inside a singularity, to be their Emissary to fight their adversaries, named Pah-Wraiths by the bajorans.

Next to that Deep Space Nine is at the center of the war between the Dominion, headed by the Founders – shapeshifters of which security chief Odo is a member. The crew consists of first officer colonel Kira Nerys of the bajoran militia, science officer Jadzia Dax a joined Trill known to Sisko as „old man“, chief engineer Chief Miles O'Brien who transferred from the USS Enterprise, as well as tactical officer Lieutenent Commander Worf a klingon raised by humans. The non- military personnel includes Jake Sisko son of Benjamin and Quark greedy Ferengi running the stations bar and other shady enterprises.

At the end of the sixth season Jadzia Dax is killed by former oppressor of Bajor and now renegade cardassian Gul Dukat while beeing possesed by a Pah-Wraith. As the Dax symbiont is hurried back to Trill to be re-joined the condition of the symbiont gets worse and as last resort it gets joined to unprepared counselor Ezri Tegan, who is by accident the only unjoined Trill abroad the starfleet vessel.

As Ezri Dax returns in the middle of the final phase of the Dominion war she has to find her way around her former husband Worf and former love doctor Julian Bashir while also defining new goals with seven more lifetimes under her belt. And as this is not enough she also has to counsel the war-stricken population of Deep space Nine as well as filling a bridge position abroad Deep Space Nine's warship: The Defiant.

My Opinion:

While beeing only on board one year the role of Ezri Dax is still the signiature role for Nicole DeBoer. The writing team also gave her much to do. Next to the basic challenges listed above Ezri got quite some screentime with episodes focussing on her:

Afterimage: New to the station Ezri has problems fitting in with her new but also well-known crewmates, while trying to help Garak who thinks he is a defector as he helps the Federation and its allies against the Dominion including the Cardassians.

Prodigal Daughter: Ezri returning home only to discover that her family is partially involved with the Orion syndicate.

Field Of Fire: A serial killer is loose abroad the station. Reluctantly Ezri offers to bring her former host Joran to life, who also was a killer – with the danger of getting lost inside Dax's former lifes.

Penumbra, Til Death Do Us Part, Strange Bedfellows: Worf is lost in the Badlands ofter a battle with Dominion Jem Hadar forces. As the search for survivors is cancelled, Ezri Dax hijacks a single Runabout to search for her former husband. Ezri is succesful but shortly after she crashes with Worf and later on gets captured by the Dominion, meanwhile exploring old and new emotions on both sides – and in the end witnessing a dangerous new alliance, and a near execution.
